BrakeLight
BrakeLight (2021) is a dark comedy depicting Ulla and Ian, a married couple, who must overcome their incessant bickering in order to cover up a murder they’ve accidentally committed.
"With this film, we want to depict the realities of being confined with another person, the deep seated tensions that arise as a result, but ultimately, that we have to choose to love those around us."
About the project
This was another small budget project undertaken entirely by students at York University with myself coming on as a Gaffer and Grip. Shot over a week of night shoots in April, the film was a challenge to make between freezing temperatures and COVID shooting rules.
Lighting outside and without a generator meant wide utilisation of LED battery operated lighting, specifically five large panels rigged up for wide shots. The, at the time, new Aputure MC lights allowed for discrete inside car lighting for closeups with Astera Titan Tubes duplicating street lighting. Rigging lighting and cameras on the picture car proved a worthwhile challenge providing dynamic angles throughout. Shooting on the RED Dragon with Angénieux lenses with a focused, yet wide area lighting plan was undertaken to give the film a feel bigger than its budget.
