Clara
Clara (2019) is a TV drama about an interesting figure who lived in 1850s Wakefield. Clara Clarkson was a suffragist, an abolitionist and a lover and protector of women in the Merrie City.
Clara struggles to balance her relationship with companion Harriet and what is expected from her in Victorian society, dodging the charms of doting widower Henry and the vehement disapproval of her mother Sarah.
Winner: Best period film SCFF
About the project
The Clara TV drama, as it would become, was originally envisioned as part of "the forgotten women of Wakefield project", a non-profit organisation aimed at highlighting activists for women's rights and LGBTQ representation.
This shoot, being a period piece, was intended to be very naturalistic and designed around accenting the natural winter lighting and feel of the location. Most of the lighting was done with large HMI and tungsten sources, keeping all the sources traditional feeling to match the 1850s feel.
