Mugpuss

Mugpuss (2022) is an absurdist comedy short film about two friends and the mug that suddenly comes between them.

About the project

A first foray into the writer/director role for Joe Wharfe, this eight minute film was conceived around the central prop/character 'mugpuss' and brought to life by the creative camera work of Marta Vitola.

Shooting in a very condensed space of time and with a zero budget meant thinking creatively throughout, and fully utilising the equipment and location around us. Many shots have only a handful of small lights in them, with mirrors and bedsheets placed to make the most use of them. The 'Heath Robinson' approach allowed us to move very quickly between setups without limiting the actors and allowing them to improvise and fleshout the absurdity in their performance. The lighting is medium high key throughout the majority of the film for a natural feel, with some more vivid colours and directional choices coming in during the final scenes.
